In the early 1980's I drove my 1972 International pick-up truck and home made horse trailer to compete in a 50 mile endurance race in the San Jose area. I made it there, with my 5 year old daughter and 13 year old baby-sitter, but blew out a tire on the horse trailer on the way. Luckily, I had a spare. I had heard about Virl, and was in awe when I actually met him that weekend. As we were packing up to leave to drive back to Mendocino, about 6 hours north, he saw we didn't have a spare tire on the side of the trailer. He said I couldn't risk driving so far without a spare (I guess he saw the condition of my remaining tires!) and offered me his. I protested: "How will I ever get it back to you?" Virl wasn't worried. He said "You'll find a way... or you'll pass it on to someone else who needs it." Well, we made it home, and our mutual friend Kerry Ridgway eventually got the tire back to Virl. I've never forgotten his kindness.
